Hunters’ ears may have perked up when they heard Region 7 in southeastern Montana will be offering one moose tag this hunting season. It was only a little over a decade ago that moose were a rarity in the region. Now, according to wildlife manager Brett Dorak, they have been seen in most of the region’s hunting districts. The moose are largely concentrating around the Missouri and Yellowstone river bottoms. Western North Dakota, near Williston, has seen an increase in moose, and these animals are moving west in search of habitat. The animals could also be filtering in from the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming as well as Canada. Region 6, in northeastern Montana, has had a moose hunt since 2008. Every year since then, interest in the hunt has grown and so has the number of tags issued. Will that also be the case in southeast Montana?
