It was a huge deal in 1995 when Big Sky Resort opened its Lone Peak Tram to the summit of its 11,166-foot mountain. Even if snowboarders or skiers weren’t up for the terrain, they could gaze across some incredible mountain scenery. This winter, Big Sky will open up its new tram, a supersized feature that will allow up to 75 people to ride to the top compared to 15 in the old tram. Construction on the new equipment started last summer. This year’s work was slowed by an extremely wet June, setting contractors back, but they’ve been able to catch up and are on schedule. Work will continue into the winter as the final touches and testing is done. Unlike in the past, skiers and snowboarders will have to purchase a ticket for each ride on the new tram. The price will fluctuate based on conditions. One cool feature is that when all of Big Sky’s 2025 Vision work is done, visitors will be able to ride a gondola from the base to the tram and then to the top of the summit in winter and summer – a bottom to top seamless experience. At the top, a glass viewing area will enable riders to take in the vast view. For more on the construction of the tram, check out my story at https://billingsgazette.com/outdoors/.
