Livingston MT, October 5, 2023—Work on the Shields River Road will commence as early as October 9th to replace the Dugout Creek Ford. The newly constructed creek crossing is expected to improve the ecological health of the watershed. Additionally, the development aims to provide a safer and more convenient passage for recreational activities. The project will take place in the northern section of the loop road between Crandall Creek and Lodgepole Creek.
The Dugout Creek Ford Project involves a collaborative effort between the Custer Gallatin National Forest, Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks, and several other partners. This project is one of many initiatives aimed at improving the watersheds in the greater Shields River drainage area. The replacement of the ford will enable the Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout to access Dugout Creek for spawning and rearing purposes.
Efforts are being made to avoid a full road closure, but intermittent closures may occur. Please avoid the construction area and plan alternative routes. Shields Road is part of a loop, allowing travelers to bypass the construction zone. Expect traffic delays if passing through the work site and be mindful of hauling activities on nearby roads.
