Red Lodge, MT, April 22, 2025— The Beartooth Ranger District will temporarily close a section of Forest Road 2072, known as West Rosebud Road, from April 22 to May 8, 2025. This closure is necessary to replace the second Chicken Creek Bridge and will extend from mile marker 13.88 to the end of the road.
The bridge replacement is a crucial part of ongoing flood repair efforts, following damage from the significant flooding event in 2022. During that event, the stream overtopped the structure, causing damage from debris. A temporary bridge was installed to maintain access, which will now be replaced with a permanent structure designed to support the creek’s hydrologic function and ensure the long-term integrity of the road.
Beartooth District Ranger Amy Haas expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The replacement of the Chicken Creek bridge is essential after the 2022 flood. We are thrilled to provide more stable access to this well-frequented drainage and recreation area.”
The bridge work has been strategically scheduled during an “off-season” in May, before anticipated high water flows and the peak recreational use. This timing offers an ideal opportunity to complete the bridge replacement with minimal disruption. West Rosebud Road is a popular destination for recreation throughout the year, and this proactive measure will ensure safe access and proper roadway function in the future.
The Custer Gallatin National Forest appreciates your patience during this closure period and looks forward to reopening the road soon. For more information, please contact the Beartooth Ranger District Office at 406-446-2103.
