Before you hit the trail with tag in hand, make sure you have the basics locked down—especially if you’re between 12 and 17. Montana has a two-step system: complete the online Hunter Ed course, then show up for a required in-person field day, where you’ll get hands-on with firearm handling, hunting ethics, and maybe even some live fire (depending on the location). Do you already have your field day qualifier certificate? Great—now sign up for the real-world portion. Adults 18 and over don’t have to attend the field day, but it’s not a bad idea if you want some practical experience before stepping into the woods. And yes, even future sharpshooters have to show their skills—you can’t fake your way through the safety test. If you haven’t started the online course yet, head over to Hunter-Ed.com and get started.

Note: If there is not a field day listed near you, keep checking this site as new courses are posted weekly. Or, call your Regional FWP office for more information.
