I think it’s safe to say that Bigfoot has it made in Montana, if Bigfoot is out there. With 30 million acres of public land, ginormous mountains and endless forests, this place is a mythical creature’s dream home. It’s like Montana put out the welcome mat for Bigfoot—plenty of space to lurk in the shadows, snack on huckleberries and give hikers the ol’ “I’m just a figment of your imagination” routine. If Bigfoot is real, he’s definitely living the good life here, dodging trail cams and avoiding any social interaction, because let’s be real, we’d all be a little camera shy if we were 8 feet tall and covered in hair.

Okay, do we actually have evidence somewhere that Bigfoot exists in the Big Sky State? Well, do you consider reported sightings evidence? You might as well grab your binos and hit the record button on your cell phone, because there actually is weird stuff going on and has been for quite some time. Giant footprints near Flathead Lake have been spotted, and many eerie calls echoing through the Yaak Valley have people wondering what is true. As a matter of fact, Missoula County in western Montana is basically Bigfoot’s favorite hangout spot. With 17 sightings over the years, it’s the state’s hotspot for Sasquatch activity. We’re talking biologists, hunters and regular folks all spotting something… definitely not a bear. One of the most memorable encounters happened in 2006 when a biologist saw a big, upright figure strolling across a ridge. Fast forward to 2012, and a Massachusetts vet and her family snapped a pic of a dark, two-legged shadow near Waterworks Trail. You can see other hotspots across the state here.

Montana, as a whole, is, according to some, a Bigfoot hotspot. And with the abundance of huckleberries, deer and fish—it really is the perfect grocery cart for a hungry Sasquatch. I mean, there’s no real body found yet, but who’s to say Bigfoot doesn’t have its own secret burial ritual? Until we get that crystal-clear photo or selfie with the legend, we’re left with one thing: the mystery—and let’s face it, it’s kind of fun to believe.

Do you or do you know anybody who believes that Bigfoot is out in the mountains of Montana or beyond? The next time you’re out hiking, hunting, fishing, trapping or just out and about in the wilderness, don’t forget to have your camera ready–just in case!
