Great biscuits are memorable. Whether you make them for Biscuits and Gravy or any other use, fresh biscuits are great. The problem with many camp cooks is the lack of ingredients, time, or overcomplicating a recipe.
Men have a challenge remembering more than 3 things at once. This Biscuit recipe is perfect for us guys. Only two ingredients are required.
Kent Rollins is an authentic Chuckwagon Cowboy Camp Cook. His YouTube videos are great. Biscuits are often a part of many of his creative and simple fare. His recipe is simple since the added ingredients are already in the flour and cream. A Dutch Oven is the perfect baking tool to make a quick batch of biscuits.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 cups of self-rising flour
- 1 ½ cups of heavy cream
INSTRUCTIONS
Butter up your Dutch Oven or baking dish. Bacon Grease works great for this.
Combine the cream and flour. Mix and knead on as floured surface. The outside of the dough should not be sticky. Coat your hands in flour to control the dough.
Roll out on the surface to a thickness of ½ inch. Use a biscuit cutter to make round biscuits.
Place the rounds into the Dutch Oven or baking dish. Brush the tops with a little whipping cream.
Bake for about 12-15 minutes at 400 degrees. Turn the Dutch oven, on the coals, every 5 minutes.
You can make this dough up ahead of time. I cut them and freeze them into meal sized portions. You can bake them frozen; it just will take longer. Normally, I pull them out of the ice chest and let them come to room temperature. A good ice chest will keep the dough frozen for a week. To make biscuits just takes moments.
Of course you will also want butter for the finish. Jelly, apple butter, honey, what doesn’t go on a biscuit? The Best Biscuit Moment is when you lift the Dutch Oven lid and see golden brown fresh biscuits.
