CHRISTMAS EVE REPORT: The warm temperatures are not great for skiing so you might as well get out on the Missouri River. A buddy of mine who is moving away from Montana and myself went out recently and to our surprise the fishing was incredible. We had some great action in the early afternoon all the way to dusk. Fat, feisty rainbows — one after the other starting from 2:30P till dark. All of them were of great size — smallest being 17 inches and a couple 20 inches. We had some spotty sunlight but once there was consistent clouds, it was like a safety blanket over the water easing the fish and getting them out of the dark, deep shadow filled holes to finally eat. What did we use? I’m glad you asked. We were nymphing, pretty deep (6 to 8 feet). I started with a pink beaded pill popper on top and a beaded sowbug on bottom. They hit both but it was more on the sowbug so I eventually went double sow. Use your zebra midges, sow bugs and scuds to full advantage. Fish deep with some weight and mix it up between a pink or orange bead on top. I’d wait to go till at least after noon.
