Fresh fish is healthy and delicious. Skilled anglers can often load the boat but get skunked in the kitchen. Other anglers must catch their limits even if they do not like eating them. If they do cook fish, it’s fried. Fish can be used for so many great recipes. There is no sense keeping this precious food resource if you are going to waste it.
Maybe try some soup! This recipe is tasty to eat when you are fishing. Fill a thermos with Fish Soup and stay warm when the fishing gets cold. Like any recipe, play with the ingredients to make it your own.
Here’s how Montana Grant makes Fish Soup
- 2 cups of chunked fresh fish filets. No skin. I cut the fish into ½ inch chunks. Most fish will do but thicker and bigger fish work best. Trout works well but pike are also a great choice. Use what you have. If you feel that the fish you have is too strong tasting, add a chicken bouillon cube.
- 1 10 oz. can of condensed soup. This is when you can be creative. I like Tomato, Cream o Mushroom, or Cream o Celery soup. The key is not to burn the soup. Stir often.
- 2 cans of water
- 1 Tbsp. of Old Bay seasoning.
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp of butter
- 1 tsp of hot sauce(optional)
- ¼ cup of sherry
Mix and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the butter and sherry at the end and simmer for 10 minutes more. I have also added pasta, shrimp, scallops, or fresh veggies to the soup pot.
Serve with a lemon slice in a mug or bowl. Small oyster crackers are always popular.
This recipe is delicious and healthy. Enjoy and warm up with a mug of tasty fish soup.
Soup can be a Super meal!
