Hunters in North Idaho and Washington already have their eyes on chronic wasting disease (CWD), but now there’s something new to watch for—plague in deer, according to a recent story via KREM. Recently, Idaho Fish and Game confirmed the state’s first case of plague in a deer, found on private property in Custer County.
While plague isn’t unheard of in the western U.S. (it’s more common in ground squirrels), finding it in a deer is super rare. Fortunately, no one who handled the deer tested positive for the disease, and it’s not expected to impact hunting season. Still, hunters are reminded to stay cautious and report any sick-looking animals.
