Lunch is an important part of every outdoor outing. When hunters head out, the lunch always seems to end up in the bottom of their packs. Fishermen find their lunches in the bottom of a cooler. Usually this means that their lunch is smashed, crushed, soaked, or ruined.

Here are some ideas on how to keep your lunches bulletproof when on the hunt, catch, or camping.

  • Tupperware    Lightweight sealable and sturdy containers come in all sizes and shapes. They will keep your lunch protected. If you filet fish or dress big game, you now have storage for filets or other cuts. This also eliminates any odor issues. A waterproof Tupperware container can float in a cooler and keep your food fresh and protected.
  • Box    Cardboard boxes add some strength to protect the meal. They also serve as tinder for an emergency fire.
  • Foil   Aluminum foil adds some protection. You sandwich may get smashed but will stay in one piece.
  • Wraps   Soft bread will not stand up to getting sat on, but a tortilla wrap will. Make your sandwich a wrapped-up favorite.
  • Thermos/soups    Lunch can be a soup, chowder, smoothie, or other pourable concoction.
  • Zip bags for no leaks   If you need pickles or other wet snacks, double up your zip bags to prevent leaks.
  • Appropriate lunch for the event     Plan an appropriate lunch that has a chance of survival. If the chips are brittle, they will break, soft bread will smash, etc. Lots of small snacks can survive and make the time pass easily. Peanut butter will easily stick and stay on bread or crackers.
  • Hard Bun/Bread     Stiff and hard bread/rolls can survive getting squished.
  • Plenty of fluids   Water is best for making sure that your lunch gets washed down and begins digesting. Small sport drinks, energy powders, and other flavored favorites can be welcome. Hydration is important. Leave the booze back at camp.

Stay on target with an intact and tasty lunch!
