Accidents happen. Whenever we are around water, rural areas, an adventure activity, an injury can happen fast. Many of these incidents are preventable but not always. If an accident happens, here are some simple steps to immediately consider.

  1. Assist yourself first! Make sure that you are ok before going to the assistance of others. You may become the person that needs rescued, if you are injured, or not trained to rescue others.
  2. Never risk your life over Stuff! Equipment, gear, and stuff can be replaced.
  3. Have someone or summon help if needed. Not everywhere has a cell phone signal, but most areas do. 911, then do what you must.
  4. Report accidents to the authorities asap. This is required if there is substantial property damage, injury, or death.

It is important t o keep victims calm and treat for Shock, “If their face is pale raise their tail, if they are red, raise their head.” Keep the victim calm and still while you check for injuries. Panic is a deadly threat.

Treat the A, B. C’s. Check for breathing, Airway. Next look for Bleeding. C relates to critical concerns like broken bones, or other severe injury. Completing a Triage is important.

The most common injuries for outdoors adventurers are.

Burns, from campfires or sunburn

Drowning from submersion in water

Sprains, strains, dislocations, and injury from falling.

Wounds and bleeding from axes, knives, and sharp encounters.

Hypothermia. This happens at all temperatures. Exposure can be fatal.

First Aid is “Immediate Temporary Aid.” This means that a Dr. or urgent care is the next choice. All outdoors men and women should take a First Aid course. Education is a wonderful way to make sure that lives are safe and protected. You will be more confident when you are trained to deal with emergency situations and injuries. Many of these courses are free or inexpensive.

It is also important to prepare and anticipate the potential risks and understand how to avoid them or deal with them. Know what to do to help yourself or others.

Training can save lives!
