KALISPELL — The application period is opening for youth hunters to participate in a limited hunting opportunity at Bad Rock Canyon Wildlife Management Area near Columbia Falls.

Bad Rock Canyon WMA off U.S. Highway 2 East provides seasonal recreation opportunities, including limited hunting for certain game species. Public access is limited at the WMA to hunting only from the start of the youth two-day deer hunt starting Oct. 17 through the end of the general hunting season on Dec. 1.

Permission is required to hunt Bad Rock Canyon WMA and is issued on a limited basis. Permission is administered by a random drawing. Hunting occurs Thursdays through Sundays (or Mondays if a holiday.) All species may be hunted on this WMA with valid licenses during the general season. This WMA is in Deer/Elk Hunting District 170. Only youth hunters ages 10-15 and hunters with a permit to hunt from a vehicle (PTHFV) are eligible to hunt the general season on the WMA.

Hunters are required to access the WMA from designated parking areas at the new U.S. 2 parking area or at River Road.

Applications are open from Sept. 1-30 for the limited drawing for the youth two-day and general hunting season. Applications can be found online at https://fwp.mt.gov/aboutfwp/regions/region1 [links-2.govdelivery.com] or at the FWP Kalispell office, 490 N. Meridian. For more information, contact 406-752-5501.

After the general hunting season ends Dec. 1, Bad Rock Canyon WMA will be closed to all public access through May 15 at noon to protect big game winter range. FWP’s Wildlife Management Areas are managed with wildlife and wildlife habitat conservation as the priority.

Please report any violations to 1-800-TIP-MONT. Callers may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
