BILLINGS – Sandhill crane hunters need to be aware of a hunting district boundary change in south-central Montana for the 2024 season.

The portion of Stillwater County north of I-90 was previously part of the over-the-counter hunting area. New in 2024, this portion of Stillwater County north of I-90 will be included in hunting district 586 and hunters will need the 586-01 special permit to harvest cranes in this area. Stillwater County south of I-90 remains fully closed to sandhill crane hunting as it has been for previous seasons.

Sandhill crane hunting for districts 586 and 599 opens Sept. 1. Hunting in the remainder of the Central Flyway, where over-the-counter permits may be used, opens Sept. 28.

Additional information on sandhill crane hunting, including regulations, can be found here: fwp.mt.gov/hunt/regulations/sandhill-crane.
