Just wanted to share a recent boating incident that really hits home the importance of safety on the water. Over in Weymouth, Mass., a 21-foot sailboat and a 38-foot powerboat collided near Grape Island. The sailboat ended up mostly underwater, with only its mast visible, and the powerboat had some noticeable damage.

Ferry passenger, who saw the aftermath, expressed her concern, saying she hoped everyone was okay. Unfortunately, the sailboat’s crew— a man and a woman— were seriously injured, likely from the powerboat’s propeller. The good news is that the powerboat’s passengers were unharmed and questioned by authorities.

As David McGuiness, another ferry passenger, pointed out, it was quite a shock, especially on a calm day. Dennis Hynes, a longtime sailboater, noted that boats should slow down in tight spots like the channel between Weymouth and Grape Island and mentioned that sailboats typically have the right of way.
