Everyone has a birthday. This day is an annual celebration of when we arrived on planet Earth. The real award should go to the mothers that survived giving birth. The celebration of Birthdays can be fun and a reminder to all of us that we are mortal.

Every Birthday is one less. As we age, our Birthdays change. We once were excited to receive gifts and have a party. A fun toy, money in cards, and a tasty cake were all wonderful. When we get older, we are glad to be around.

What was your BEST Birthday Gift? I certainly remember my first shotgun. It was a twelve ga. Ithaca pump Model 37 pump. My Dad took me to buy it at Ponento’s gun shop for $87! I still use this favorite shotgun.

I always loved to celebrate my Birthday on the day, not when it was convenient for others. Our family was usually on vacation when my August birthday came around. We celebrated it all over the country. Our 14-foot Winnebago would become party central. My mom would bake my favorite cake in a small gas oven or over the campfire. Angel Food with chocolate icing. Each year there would be more candles on the cake.

We never had many parties for my Birthday, since we were rarely home. Even as an adult, I would be out of town on a fishing adventure. One of my favorite Birthdays happened along the banks of the South Fork of the Snake River, in Idaho. I was able to fish in a secluded spot alone without interruption and where I could not see any sign of civilization. It was like I went back in time. The cutthroats were feeding on Rusty Spinners. The fishing was hot throughout the afternoon hatch and I had the exact patterns needed from emergers to dries, to the spinner fall. I netted a boatload of Birthday Trout with just an Eagle watching me.

Birthdays are a day when we are remembered. Your Facebook, Twitter, X, or favorite social app lights up. Funny memes, messages, old pictures, and just Howdy are common. Folks just want to take a moment to say hello, congrats, and remember what you meant in their lives. We all do it and we all love it!

Thanks to all that remember Montana Grant, Mr. Soukup the teacher, Professor Soukup the university educator, Beefmaster, Big Poppa, and” Souk” the classmate, or just Grant, their friend or old boyfriend. May the Golden Years continue!
