FWP News: Additional counties in Montana placed under fire restrictions

Restrictions affect FWP properties in Deer Lodge, Sweet Grass, Treasure and Stillwater counties

HELENA – Fire restrictions continue to spread to other Montana counties as the summer heat continues. Stage I fire restrictions went into effect today at 12:01 a.m. for Deer Lodge County in west-central Montana. In south-central Montana, Stage I restrictions go into effect for Stillwater County, and Stage II restrictions go into effect in Sweet Grass County at 12:01 a.m., Friday, July 26. And in southeastern Montana, Stage I restrictions go into effect at 12:01 a.m., Friday, for Treasure County.

FWP-managed properties in Deer Lodge County include:

  • Warm Springs Wildlife Management Area (WMA)

  • Lost Creek WMA

  • Lost Creek State Park

  • Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park

  • Mount Haggin WMA

  • Sportsman’s Park Fishing Access Site (FAS)

  • Fishtrap Creek FAS

  • Garrity Mountain WMA

  • Blue Eyed Nellie WMA

  • Stuart Mill Bay FAS

  • Stucky Ridge WMA

FWP-managed properties in Stillwater County include:

  • Big Lake Wildlife Management Area

  • Buffalo Jump FAS

  • Castle Rock FAS

  • Cliff Swallow FAS

  • Fireman’s Point FAS

  • Big Lake Wildlife Management Area

  • Buffalo Jump FAS

  • Castle Rock FAS

  • Cliff Swallow FAS

  • Fireman’s Point FAS

  • Holmgren FAS

  • Homestead Isle FAS

  • Indian Fort FAS

  • Jeffrey’s Landing FAS

  • Moraine FAS

  • Rosebud Isle FAS

  • Swinging Bridge FAS

  • Whitebird FAS

FWP-managed properties in Sweet Grass County include:

  • Big Rock Fishing FAS

  • Boulder Forks FAS

  • Bratten FAS

  • Grey Bear FAS

  • Otter Creek FAS

  • Pelican FAS

  • Greycliff Prairie Dog Town State Park

FFWP-managed properties in Treasure County include:

  • Myers Bridge FAS

  • Isaac Homestead WMA

  • Amelia Island WMA

Stage I fire restrictions prohibit:

  • Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire or campfire.

  • Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.

In addition to the actions in Stage I, Stage II also prohibits:

  • Operating motorized vehicles off designated roads and trails.

  • Using an explosive.

  • The following acts are prohibited from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m.:

    • Operating any internal combustion engine.

    • Welding, or operating acetylene or other torch with an open flame.

Gas or propane stoves that can be turned on and off are still allowed under Stage 2 restrictions.

These restrictions at FWP sites will be in place until further notice. Due to dry conditions and high fire danger FWP urges people to use caution while they are out recreating.
