The park has been busy with public programs, with more planned this fall
LOLO –Travelers’ Rest State Park and visitor center will move to slightly reduced off-season hours on October 1 and will be hosting public programs throughout the fall and winter.
From October 1, 2023-April 30, 2024, the visitor center will be open from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Wednesday – Sunday and closed on Monday and Tuesday. The visitor center will also be closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.
The park entrance gate will remain open to vehicles daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., except on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Pedestrian entrances and park trails are open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year.
Travelers’ Rest is a significant site for Native Americans and a Lewis and Clark Expedition archaeologically verified campsite. The park hosts many public programs, including some scheduled for this fall.
Trekker Kids free programs on Saturdays in October (10:30-11:30 a.m.):
- Oct. 7: Come make your own candle!
- Oct 21: Meet live raptors, hosted by the Raptors of the Rockies education group.
“Corpse” of Discovery special event:
- October 28 (1-4 p.m.); Frightfully fun activities for all ages. Please bring a nonperishable food donation for the food bank as an entry fee. Activities include pumpkin bowling, creatures of the night, hot apple cider, witch ring toss, a photo booth and more.
This year, Travelers’ Rest has been a field trip destination for over 1,000 students from 24 schools across western Montana and hosted 10 indigenous demonstrators that covered topics such as bead work and fish trap making. In collaboration with local partners, the park held a free family fishing day where participants learned casting, riparian habitat, and knot tying.
Travelers’ Rest Connection, a nonprofit group that helps support the park, held their annual fundraising event on September 15th. The event raises money for educational events and public programming at the park.
