They say that anything wrapped in bacon tastes better. Here is a hunt/fish camp recipe that will turn some heads. When the Camp Cook carries out these tasty delights, don’t mention what they are until a few have been eaten. In reality, these are not made with real elk turds, just something the same size, shape, and color.
Camp is supposed to be fun and this fun, simple, and tasty recipe is something happy campers will eat the crap out of! Piggin out on natural finger food will make some great memories.
BACON WRAPPED ELK TURDS
These tasty turds can be made in a foil pouch, Dutch oven, or a baking dish. There will be no leftovers. Hungry campers will devour these delicious turds as fast as they can stick them with a toothpick!
- 1 Lb. of Lil Smokies (sausages) You can use any game sausage or even just cut up hot dogs.
- 1 Lb. Bacon Cut each strip into thirds. Use a thinner bacon slice.
- 1 stick of butter
- 2 Cups of brown sugar, or any thick BBQ sauce. In a pinch, I used ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, when I was improvising.
Wrap each smokie with a bacon blanket. Place the turd bundles into a foil pack, baking dish or Dutch Oven. If you use a Dutch Oven, line it with foil, for an easier cleanup.
Stack the turds in a single layer. Now pour the melted butter, mixed with half of the brown sugar over top the turds. Sprinkle the rest of the brown sugar on top.
Bake for 15-25 minutes at 350 degrees or so. When you are camping you just get things baking. Add 5 minutes for a crispier bacon coating. Use toothpicks or a long wooden skewer to stab the turds and serve. I once just carved sticks to use as servers.
Presentation is key.
