Lewis and Clark Public Health:
As Montanans and visitors head to local ponds, lakes and reservoirs for summer fun, public health officials urge citizens to know the health risks of Harmful Algal Blooms, or “HABs”, particularly at Canyon Ferry Lake.
Recent observations by our Environmental Health Team Include:
General – All along the north end of the lake from West Shore Drive to the dam to Court Sheriff Campground, there are large lime green bands of algae visible in the lake. These are particularly bad in sheltered coves and by the dam. Seems to be worse on the west side. You can see these well in the first few photos at Lewis & Clark Day Use Area.
Court Sheriff Campground – There is a presence of ‘grass clipping’ algae at this campground, but the bloom is not as thick as other places. See the first two photos.
Lewis & Clark Day Use Area – The water in this area is a thick pea soup consistency with lime green color. Very heavy presence of algae that looks to be a HAB.
