Winter means cold and miserable weather. If you are staying indoors and tying flies, cleaning gear, building tackle, and waiting for Spring, maybe consider watching some great movies about FISHING!!!

As a kid, I remember going to the Drive-In movie with my brother and Aunt Francie. The theater was in Uniontown, PA. The movie was “Man’s Favorite Sport!” It starred Paula Prentiss and Rock Hudson. The show had a lot of fishing that showed many of the challenges all anglers have gone through. The girls end up being better anglers than the guys. We fed on popcorn and sodas as we laughed at this fun fishing film, that few people remember.

Movies like “And A River Runs Through it” are certainly more known. This 1992 film about fly fishing changed the sport of fly fishing forever. Montana has become overcrowded with Brad Pitt Fly Fishing wannabes.

Back in the 1960’s a show called The American Sportsman, was the best show to watch about fishing and hunting. Curt Gowdy hosted many of the greatest sports of the time. The Fly Fisherman starring Gadabout Gaddis was also a wonderful show to watch.

On Golden Pond, with Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn was a superb movie about fishing and aging. Old Walter was the monster fish that the old man and young kid pursued. Spencer Tracy went after a giant marlin in The Old Man and the Sea. He also acted a fisherman’s role in Captains Courageous. This great fishing adventure was soon followed by Gregory Peck chasing Moby Dick, the Great White Whale.

Newer movies highlighted fishing. Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau competed for fish and girlfriends in Grumpy Old Men. Gone Fishing highlighted the best fishing buddies, Joe Pesci and Danny Glover. The Bait Shop was a fun fishing comedy starring Bill Engvall and Billy Ray Cyrus.

Jaws was a classic fishing movie about a great white shark that could bite back. Whatever your favorite fishing movie is, dial them up on a cold and miserable day. If you have to rehab or are just being lazy, grab a bowl of popcorn, salsa and chips, or your favorite snack. Search your apps or movie channels to search up “Fishing Movies and shows!”

Sit back and catch a big one!
