Ice fishing is supposed to be about freezing your butt off, not dodging flames, but for one Vermont family, things took a scary turn when their shanty suddenly caught fire. Locals suspect methane gas trapped under the ice might be the culprit—something some anglers have known about for years. There’s even an old video (you definitely need to watch this) of a methane geyser being lit on fire that burned for hours. Officials, on the other hand, think a faulty propane tank might be to blame. Either way, the fire left a dad and his two daughters with some serious burns, but thankfully, they’re on the mend. (You can find updates on the family’s healing from “mom” here.)

One local guide, Logan Boyd, is now putting up warning signs himself since the town won’t. Check out his Facebook post here. But with no clear answers on what actually happened, one thing’s for sure—ice fishing just got a little more intense.
