Anglers love to catch fish but what do they say when they get hooked up?
My favorite part of catching fish is when you feel the strike or bite, set the hook, and know that I have the fish hooked. After that, anything goes.
Back in the day, I fished with many amazing Fly Guys, along the limestone streams of Pennsylvania. Fishing in Spring creeks was hard. My older fly friends counted strikes as hook-ups. “I hung 5 bigguns today!” In their minds, just getting a smart lunker to strike was the hardest part. They planned to Catch and Release anyway. Not having to fight, stress the fish, or damage it, was all good.
The fighting, netting, dehooking, and all parts of the fish catching routine are great, but what do you say when you realize that you have a fish hooked?
Over the years, I have heard many Catch Phrases. Here are a few.
FISH ON!
Hammer Time
I’m in the Bite!
Gottem!
Oh Yea, It’s a Biggun!!
Tight Lines!
GOT ONE!
Get the Net!
Thank You Jesus!
I got you now!
Tightie Whitie!
When you lose a fish, after getting hooked up, there are also some Lost Fish Phrases.
F#%*, S#@^, Da*##^@, Go^ Da”: %#*! All these phrases are X-rated and include spitting, kicking, throwing, and more cussing.
That was a “perfect Voluntary Release! Heck, you were going to throw them back anyway.
