Moose might look like oversized, clumsy deer, but don’t let those long legs and typically calm demeanor fool you—they’re the true bosses of the backcountry. If you’re out cross-country skiing and cross paths with one, remember: they don’t care about your trail schedule. Yield the right of way, give them plenty of space, and whatever you do, don’t try to approach them for a selfie (no matter how “Instagram-worthy” it seems). Moose can go from chill to charging faster than you can say, “bad idea.” So, keep your distance, admire their wild majesty from afar, and let them own the trail—because when it comes to moose, respect isn’t optional, it’s survival!
