Bozeman Ranger District Addresses Unsustainable Practices to Protect Natural Resources, Infrastructure, and Minimize Probability of Human Caused Wildfires
Bozeman MT, Dec. 31, 2024— The Bozeman Ranger District is implementing a new ban on the possession of pallets on National Forest System lands within the district. The pallet possession ban is an important step in protecting the district’s natural resources, developed infrastructure, and ensuring the safety of the public. Order #01-11-06-25-03 is effective January 1st, 2025.
This decision comes after years of managing the negative impacts associated with pallet fires in the area. The increasing popularity of the Bozeman area as a destination for recreation and living, has put a strain on the Bozeman Ranger District’s 600,000+ acres of public lands, including an increase in the number of pallet fires which includes multiple pallet fires per week. This activity has resulted in a significant amount of trash, damage to natural resources, and safety hazards. Pallet fires also leave behind many nails and debris, which can puncture tires and pose a safety risk to forest visitors and staff. Forest Service crews spend an average of 5 hours per week picking up garbage and using magnet rollers to remove nails from pallet fire sites. Additionally, in the winter season, pallet fires directly disrupt recreation opportunities. Particularly in Hyalite Canyon, plow operations cannot take place at trailheads with pallet debris due to the expensive damage incurred from nails to snowplow equipment.
“Pallet created fires pose a significant risk to the health and safety of our visitors and staff,” said Corey Lewellen, Bozeman District Ranger. “We’ve tried various methods to address the issue, including education, signage, and enforcement, but the problem persists. This ban is a necessary step to protect the Bozeman Ranger District’s natural resources and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.”
The special order prohibits the possession of pallets for any purpose, including building fires, on all National Forest System lands within the Bozeman Ranger District. This includes on roads, at trailheads, campgrounds, and dispersed camping areas. Possession encompasses all methods of transporting pallets, such as in the bed of a truck or in a trailer, as well as simply having pallets present. Visitors are encouraged to use designated fire rings when available. Violators of the ban will be subject to citations and fines.
