Giving old gas fields back to the bird (by Brett French)

Sage grouse, along with other wildlife, will soon have restored habitat in southeastern Montana. Denbury Resources is paying to rehabilitate an old natural gas field near Alzada as part of its restoration work for an upcoming CO2 pipeline in the area. As part of the state’s plan to ensure sage grouse stay off the endangered species list in identified priority habitats, developers are required to either pay into a fund for restoration work or do it themselves. Denbury is the first company to take on the work, rather than pay the state which then funds grants for programs.
