Jason Maxwell and his buck (3rd place)

The Big Buck Contest at the Great Rockies Sport Show was pretty darn cool and educational, too.  Between my other half and me, we submitted two bucks.  The one I submitted scored a 114 3/8, which wasn’t big enough to place, and the one Jason Maxwell submitted scored 122 5/8, taking THIRD PLACE in the Big Buck Contest’s typical whitetail category!  (You can find the story of how Jason got his buck here: https://www.montanaoutdoor.com/2012/10/the-gravel-pit-buck-family/)

The scoring was done by Larry, official Boone and Crockett Measurer #508.  The process of scoring was interesting to watch, as this was the first time I had ever seen it done.  It cleared up some questions I had on how the final numbers were calculated, such as how they come up with the deductions.  The Boone and Crockett website also has an application that allows you to “green score” your antlers and horns yourself.  It includes a calculator with easy-entry boxes to enter your measurements.  (Click HERE for the Boone and Crockett “green score” calculator)

1st place winning bull by Quinton Grantier

There were several prizes given for deer and elk, with the first place typical elk scoring 364 3/8.  Youth hunter, 16 year-old Quinton Grantier shot his massive bull here in western Montana.  Larry, the Boone and Crockett scorer, was very impressed with this bull and referred to it as “one of the best bulls a person could get”.

If you missed the contest this year, be sure to check it out next year at the Great Rockies Sport Show, as you can get your antlers/horns scored for free, AND cash prizes are given for first through third places!  Visit www.greatrockiesshow.com for more information!  See you next year!
